Description

This unique and healthy elixir is made by using a codified recipe of medieval Armenian medicine and by a special method of distillation. It contains medicinal and aromatic plants, mainly Crataegus armena (hawthorn) and Ziziphora tenuior.
Since ancient times, the elixir was known for its healing and strengthening properties. It has an antioxidant, antifungal, antimicrobial, anti-tumor, hepato-protective and immunity enhancing effect. It regulates metabolism, improve well-being, the respiratory, gastrointestinal, nervous and cardiovascular systems. It improves memory, reduces blood pressure and the risk of atherosclerosis, stroke and heart attack. It also contributes to overcoming fatigue, heightened emotionality, feelings of anxiety and depression and, by the definition of medieval doctors, it “invigorates and cheers the heart”.
In the Middle Ages, the preparation and storage of the elixir was normally carried out in monasteries, where a sacred rite was performed over it, with prayers and chants. Collection and processing of rare alpine plants were also accompanied by special rituals on special lunar days, considering it a pledge of healing, unique aroma and taste of “Arates”. In the past this healing drink, the making of which was known only to Armenians, was taken out of Armenia and used as a panacea for mental and physical health.
The name “Arates” is not accidental, too. This drink has always been made in Vayots Dzor, in the medieval village of Arates, using water from high mountain springs and plants. After distillation, the elixir is aged for several years in oak barrels.
Kings, princes and meliks used it every morning before breakfast, which was considered to be the guarantee of their healthy and long life.
Elixir should be consumed 5-10 ml before meals.
The recipe of the elixir is based on medieval manuscripts and brought to life by Armen Sahakyan, a phyto-therapeutist doctor, a senior researcher of the Yerevan Institute of Ancient Manuscripts named after. M. Mashtots – Matenadaran.
Thanks to joint efforts with Matenadaran, the art of preparation and aging of this unique healing elixir was restored, according to the old traditions, in Vayots Dzor historical village of Arates.
